Accessibility

BC Libraries Co-op Accessibility Statement

Why it matters

The BC Libraries Cooperative believes information must be accessible to everyone, regardless of ability. We are committed to ensuring the services we provide to our members are free from accessibility barriers and to increasing staff awareness of digital accessibility standards for all member services and documentation.

Our mandate to helping libraries help people includes a commitment to providing equal access for all by offering accessible information and services and removing barriers for people with disabilities. Accessibility is not a one-time goal; it is an underlying principle in all we do.

The Accessible British Columbia Act, as well as the Accessible Act for Manitobans, are important pillars in our commitment to being an inclusive and accessible service provider to our members, and to fulfilling our mandate.

How we do this

BC Libraries Co-op has established an accessibility committee in 2022 to identify barriers and act as an advisor to the Co-operative on how to remove and prevent barriers in the future.

We continuously work to ensure that our web content meets the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 level AA standards through testing.

Our team at NNELS (National Network for Equitable Library Service) conducted in-depth accessibility and usability testing of our website, including testing with screen readers by people with lived experience with print disabilities. As a team we continue to revise and apply updates to accessibility standards and principles to inform ongoing improvements.

Accessibility in Service Areas

We continue to learn, improve and set internal accessibility standards across all areas of our work. Accessibility concerns all our service areas, and we provide updates to progress across services provided on our website. Please find more information about each area below:
